I have given out about ten ribbons from North Fork Middle School. The remainder I have given to the school secretary, Karen Cook. Many students picked up a registration forms.

Signal Knob Middle School Reports In!

Read and Win applications turned in for reward ribbons to date.

SKMS students in sixth and seventh grade have turned in 45 completed applications and received ribbons. The remaining ribbons in the school office with directions to Mrs. Whittington and Mrs. Wymer for continuing the program until August 17.

We are excited about the increased student response we had this year and hope that the interest will continue over the summer and during our next school year should Shenandoah County Fair plan to continue the program.

Six Shenandoah County Elementary and Middle Schools are not praticipating in this year's program. We hope to get out all 1,000 blue ribbons and see a flood of ribbon wearing children arrive on Sunday August 30th!

One Thousand Students can Read and Win a Free Day at the Shenandoah County Fair!

Read and Win Day Sunday August 30th

The Read and Win program is back again this year with more partnering schools and libraries! One thousand blue ribbons are available for students in grades first through 8^th who complete reading books during the spring and summer months. “Close to 300 children completed the program in 2008 reading over 1,600 books and we look forward to doubling that number this year!” said Marcy McCann the Interim Manager of the Shenandoah County Fair. A meeting with Dr. Keith Rowland, Superintendent of Shenandoah County Schools and Sandy Hart, Director of Elementary Education resulted in a stronger partnership whereby teachers and librarians will be encouraged to work with students who wish to participate in the program.

The program is simple! Students have an opportunity to read the required number of books to earn a blue ribbon to gain free admission to the fair on Read and Win Day, Sunday August 30^th. Winners also earn a coupon for a free or discounted item from food concessionaires and vendors. Winners might be awarded a hamburger from Shaffer’s Barbeque or a snow cone from Kibler’s Furniture, an ice cream cone from Bill & Ed’s Concessions or a variety of other fun fare. “George Shaffer said “We are happy to support this reading initiative sponsored by the International Association of Fairs and Expos by offering

100 hamburgers .”

“Read and Win is an extremely successful world -wide literacy program that encourages students to use both school and public libraries. Signal Knob and Peter Muhlenberg Middle Schools are participating again this year and we look forward to expanding the program with the help of Dr. Rowland and his staff .” said McCann.

Sally Walters, Chairman of Children’s Activities at The Woodstock Library said “We are happy to sign on for a second year. We had a great time last year and the program promotes visits to our library during the summer months.” The library located at 134 North Church Street in Woodstock holds regular story times for young children and is well stocked with books and audio offerings for adults.

Read and Win is open to students in Shenandoah and surrounding counties. If living outside Shenandoah County send a self addressed stamped envelope marked Read and Win to PO Box 264 Woodstock, VA 22664 for a registration form. Check the Read and Win section of ShenCoFair.com for more information.

Register your children and encourage them to complete the reading early. Open to first through eighth grades and will run from April 30^th through August 17th.

Update! Completion of 2008 Program

We are excited to announce that 110 students from Peter Muhlenberg Middle School have completed their Read and Win forms and can now get into the Shenandoah County Fair for free on August 24, 2008! These students are very excited and so are we!!!

The Woodstock Library has issued 45 ribbons to the children that have completed their Read & Win forms. The United Methodist Church in Woodstock has 20 to 30 kids going to The Woodstock Library, August 1st to receive their ribbons. Christian Leadership Ministries also has 10 kids participating in the Read & Win Program. We are very excited that so many kids are participating.

The library in Basye, Virginia at 1382 Resort Drive is also a Read and Win a Day at the Fair location. Deadline is August 20th.

Peter Muhlenberg Middle School in the Lead!

The Shenandoah County Fair Association is pleased to announce the Read and Win Program sponsored by the International Association of Fairs and Expositions. The program is open to students from First through Eighth Grades and will run from April 12th through July 31st.

Fair Manager Marcy McCann said “The Woodstock Library has wholeheartedly joined our efforts to spark a renewed interest in reading among the youth of the Shenandoah Valley. Sally Walters and the other volunteers who manage the local endowed library have agreed to provided forms and hand out awards to students who complete the process. Mrs. Walters announced, “The Woodstock Library program kick-off will be held on Saturday, April 12th at a family National Library Week celebration. The event will be held at the library at 10:00 am and feature Donna Hughes, a local story-teller, face painting, gifts and refreshments. Kids of all ages are encouraged to attend.”

Our school strives to promote student reading in a variety of ways, and it was wonderful to be contacted by a community organization with the same goals – engaging students in positive reading experiences. While our student participants of the Read and Win program read to earn tangible prizes, they build literacy skills and reading confidence that provides a life-long reward.”

Students not attending Signal Knob or Peter Muhlenberg may participate at the Woodstock Library at 134 North Church Street in Woodstock. Supplies are limited so register and encourage children to complete the reading early.
