Over 300 children read more than 1,600 books in 2008's program. We are hoping to double that number in 2009!One thousand students have an opportunity to read the required books to earn a bookmark ribbon to gain free admission to the Fair on Read and Win Day, Sunday August 30th. Winners also earn a coupon for a free or discounted item from food concessionaires and vendors.

Read and Win Day Sunday August 30th
The Read and Win program is back again this year with more partnering schools and libraries! One thousand blue ribbons are available for students in grades first through 8th who complete reading books during the spring and summer months. “Close to 300 children completed the program in 2008 reading over 1,600 books and we look forward to doubling that number this year!” said Marcy McCann the Interim Manager of the Shenandoah County Fair. A meeting with Dr. Keith Rowland, Superintendent of Shenandoah County Schools and Sandy Hart, Director of Elementary Education resulted in a stronger partnership whereby teachers and librarians will be encouraged to work with students who wish to participate in the program.
The program is simple! Students have an opportunity to read the required number of books to earn a blue ribbon to gain free admission to the fair on Read and Win Day, Sunday August 30th. Winners also earn a coupon for a free or discounted item from food concessionaires and vendors. Winners might be awarded a hamburger from Shaffer’s Barbeque or a snow cone from Kibler’s Furniture, an ice cream cone from Bill & Ed’s Concessions or a variety of other fun fare. “George Shaffer said “We are happy to support this reading initiative sponsored by the International Association of Fairs and Expos by offering

“Read and Win is an extremely successful world -wide literacy program that encourages students to use both school and public libraries. Signal Knob and
Sally Walters, Chairman of Children’s Activities at The Woodstock Library said “We are happy to sign on for a second year. We had a great time last year and the program promotes visits to our library during the summer months.” The library located at
Read and Win is open to students in Shenandoah and surrounding counties. If living outside
Register your children and encourage them to complete the reading early. Open to first through eighth grades and will run from April 30th through August 17th.
